1# Equinox – What is Equinox ?

An equinox is an astronomical event in which the plane of Earth’s equator passes through the center of the Sun. (Source: WIKIPEDIA).

In short, Equi means EQUAL and NOX means Night. On an average day – the day and nights are not equal. Remember ? In Summer, Days are longer and in Winters, Days are shorter.

Equinox is a day when DAY AND NIGHT are or more or less equal in duration. It HAPPENS when Sun is exactly at the level of Equator.

Remember a SOLAR DAY is referred to as time period from ONE SUNRISE to the Next. 6 am today to 6 am tomorrow (an example – actual time of Sun rise may vary).

Equinox (Equal duration of DAY and NIGHT) occurs twice a year:

  1. Vernal Equinox (At the start of Spring/ Summer) – March
  2. Autumnal Equinox (At the start of Autumn/ Winter/ Fall) – September
